In my case i am talking about my Pontiac Torrent AWD it comes with choice of 2 Modes.
1. All Wheel Drive.
2. Only Front Wheel Drive.

With the exception of Subaru AWD's that tests claim the latest models get the same miles per gallon as the 2wd's, any time you engage more metal parts and pieces that create labor on the drivetrain, you lose MPG's.

If you are getting it from the dealership it should say what the relative mileages are. The AWD should use more gas because it will have to turn two driveshafts rather than one, and even if is a single driveshaft system it will still require more energy to push four wheels instead of two. But the differance might not be that much so check their mileage ratings

It consumes more in AWD mode. There's really no reason to use it unless the conditions are bad.

No, the vehicle does not have free wheeling hubs so wether the rear wheels and shafts are driven off the engine or freewheel they still turn and you save no fuel by being in front wheel drive only.

It consumes a bit more, but not much. When the situation arises that you need AWD, fuel mileage won't matter then.

Check your owners manual for fuel mileage facts.

yes. just like a truck gets better mileage in 2wd then 4wd
