I think the private accounts Bush tried to start would be a good idea.

the government should stop borrowing the surplus right away, that would be a start since it would be fiscally sound for the next 100 years if they didn't start borrowing it to begin with...secondly, they should raise the income level of contributions, third, they should provide the options of seperate accounts for those who want it. PS, ignore anyone who claims it currently runs a debt, it is going to continue to run a surplus for at least 15 more years according to any educated analysis

Get the money out of the government's hands. It should be put into a private account for each individual. That way, you're only getting what you contributed. Otherwise, you're costing everyone else who is contributing, and taking away from their eventual benefits. It is estimated, that within the next 5-10 years, there will be only 3 contributors for each recipient, and within 40 years, the ratio will be 2:1. It won't last the way that it currently functions.

As a senior citizen I appreciate Terry's observation. What would we do without social security? We would have to die.
I couldn't drive to town with out gas money to buy grocerys.
I couldn't buy grocerys. I didn't know anyone got 2000 per month most out here get less than 700. per month.
when they talk about these billionaires and people who make 150,000. that is hard to imagine anyone needs that much money. At around 8 thousand a year she is right we do not pay any taxes. My husband and I are old and we paid into it all our lives and now they say do away with it when it is all most old people have to live on. Does that 8 thousand a year these old people get really hurt the country that much?
Should it be done away with and we be allowed to starve to death?

The Churches???? are you kidding to date they haven't helped anyone but the religious leaders.
But that is a thought if we did away with all these big religious organizations and put all that money into social security it would work for a long time.
I mean it was the publics money donated to benefit the public.
Why shouldn't the government use it to make social security work? Who needs these big religious organizations anyway.
that TV evangelist was saying "yes I am rich and have a fleet of jets and it is God that has made me rich, if you send me money God will make you rich to."
It sounded like buying a lottery ticket. Well, isn't it time to collect on that lottery ticket?

Boy you people are really cruel. We could take the old people out to alaska and feed them to the polar bears.
That would be kinder than letting them starve to death.
Or start putting to sleep anyone over 65 that can't work.
these are the people who took care of you when you were a baby and couldn't take care of yourself.
I believe that to do away with social security would be a sin and a breaking of one of the ten commandments like Terry said. To honor our parents and the best way to do that is to give them an income, so they are not forced to beg on the streets for something to eat like they do in Iraq.

I think the not having social security is a sin and a breaking of one of the ten commandments to honor our parents. It gives them an income. Do you want to see our older citizens dieing in the streets because they are to old to work.
Like Mexico where they are forced to sell gun and candy.
When they get to old to work they are put out of sight to just die of starvation. These are our parents and grand parents and your saying let them starve to death in the streets?
What next a more humane way would be to just put them to sleep when they can no longer work?
What are old people going to live on? If we don't pay social security my grandparents wouldn't have any income.
I don't want to see them kicked out in the street with nothing to eat. I think you people are really cruel to old people.
A better solution would be to make it work. It was a good idea and I think it did work for a long time.

well i'd like to see it stay. but i think there needs to be a national push to get people to save their own money for retirement and not depend on social security. that could come in the form of better tax incentives for retirement saving for low income and middle class workers.
right now the national savings right is about 0%. americans save NO money for retirement or anything else. that needs to change by incentivizing retirement savings and reducing the dependnecy on social security. there should be a safety net but that safety net shouldn't be your whole retirement savings strategy.

They need to quit borrowing from it. I think stay at home people should not be able to draw it unless they have paid their share into it. I think it will have to be kept because many people don't have the discipline to put enough money back for their own retirement. People need to start an added retirement along with this as it will not keep you.

I think Social Security is pointless now. By the time I retire, it will not even be available to me. So the government is making me pay for something I will not get a return on. What a rip off, huh?

It should be mandatory to have a retirement account but you should be able to choose if you want SS or your own 401K. Your SS installment money goes directly into the general fund and then congress spends the money.
