I have a old civic with lots of miles. recentley it began giving me trouble when I started it. Before then it was running really good. When I start it it sounded like a rattle in the engine and it ran then a little while later when I would let off the gas it would turn off. Id had to keep the gas floored to keep it on. Then when I started it again it let out this loud screecing noise for a little while. I turned it off and started it the next day and it was fine. Then about 10 mins later it did the same thing. I think I probably blew a head? and the reason it started up fine was cause the gasket had sealed over night then when I drove it again it got hot and expanded. Im not sure any suggestions? There is oil around the back of the head. I know I need a new engine anyway but I just wanted to know.

Yes we all know that at 340K things are bound to go wrong. I will tell you this, if your head warped and damaged your head gasket it would not make a screeching noise, A knoking maybe but not a screeching noise. If you think that your head is warped check your oil and see if it's milky you can also check your exhaust and see if it's smoking. It may be that your timing belt tensioner is out. I would suggest to drain your oil (Why?) it will give you some answers as to if your engine is toste.

If it has 340 K miles, it might be time to sell it or send it to the giant parking lot in the sky.
