First of all, it is possible. But installing Windows Vista on a Mac would be like getting a computer running Windows Vista and installing Windows 95 on it.

When you buy a Mac laptop, you are paying about $100 USD more than you would for a similar product from Dell. Not that it is not worth it. Mac OS X is superior to Windows in every way. You are paying for a much better piece of software that "just works." If you install Windows, you lose the whole "just works" thing, and get it replaced with the standard Windows "doesn't work and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it" thing.

As for virus, you are immune to them if you run Mac OS. If you run Windows, you get to spend hours fighting them. The hardware does nothing- it is all in the software (the operating system).

So, if you are going to ruin your computer and install Windows on it, is it worth it to get a Mac anyways? Personally, I say yes for laptops. Apple laptops have a sturdy feel to them that other brands lack. But seriously, don't do it. Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac are the best operating systems out there. Windows is far behind.

I'm typing on a Macbook with Windows right now. It's a much better computer than the old Mac laptops and actually makes a decent Windows machine. You treat virus protection on the Windows side the same way you would on any PC. I've never seen a virus get into OSX.

Macs are good for "college"? Seriously do you buy that advertising crap? If you are used to XP and have been able to use XP without a lot of problems, then save yourself a lot of money and buy an XP laptop. You can install XP on a Mac, but you'd have to buy it separately. Also, if you'll be using any special software required for your course, it'll probably be Windows only, so watch out for that.

Macs are good computers... they look nice and they're generally high quality... but the truth is, if you intend to run Windows XP (or Vista) on the laptop you buy why not save yourself some money and get a PC designed for Windows (like HP or Dell)?? the only thing macs have going for them is that they are trendy, other than that they EXACTLY the same as PCs (laptop or desktop)

If you put XP on it, then you might as well buy a Dell unless you want to keep OSX on a different partition, or use some type of virtualization to run them both at the same time. It's life span should be the same as the MacBook before XP was on it.

Antivirus software stops virus', it has nothing to do with the hardware or other software.

The macbook is a very nice laptop. It will run Windows quite well. The laptop itself does not stop viruses, that is the job of software programs. Hope this helps.
My advice: Stick with OS X, you wont regret it.
