I remember I couldn't get those dang things in either the first several tries. I was at a friend's and my period started. They only had tampons and I couldn't get it in very far.
Okay, if you have a heavy flow it's easier to get one in. If you are sort of dry then it's harder to get in. The bigger the tampon, the harder it is to get it in unless you have a lot of flow there.
I used to cheat and put a dab of KY jelly or vasaline on the tip of the tampon. Then it went right in no matter what. KY is a better choice; vasoline will prevent absorption into the tampon where ever it covers.
When you put it in, if you push down a bit as if you are going #2 it will be easier to get it in.
Plastic applicators are easier to those new to tampons, in terms of sliding.
Be sure you push it in far. Don't worry about injuring yourself. There is plenty of cushiony tissue at the far end of your vagina. And that is where the flow is coming in (through a teeny tiny hole in your cervix).
A friend of mine had her mom put it in the first time. But I was waaaaaay too shy to have my mom do anything like that!

I had this problem when I started using tampons when I was about 14.
The entrance to your vagina is covered by a thin piece of skin called the "hymen". This is often broken when a girl first has sex. Before it is broken, it partially covers the vagina and makes the entrance much smaller.
I would advise you to use the smallest size of tampon you can (most brands make a "mini" size").
Try using some lubrication like a bit of petroleum jelly on the end of the tampon or applicator to make it easier to insert.
Relax - try inserting it lying down on your bed the first few times. Take your time. Don't try inserting it just before you go out or in the school bathroom. Just lie down at home, relax and have a try.
Don't be afraid to explore "down there" a bit - use a mirror if this helps. You may be tensing up because you are nervous. When you get used to what your body is like down there you will feel a bit more confident.
I would certainly ask your mother, a nurse or other trusted older female etc for some advice here, or a female doctor.

From http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/azhealthtopics/ht/How_Insert_Tamp.htm:
"Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder.
The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort.
Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps.
Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed.
Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube.
Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body.
Use your other hand to open your vagina.
Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina.
Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube.
With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely.
Gently pull the two tubes out together.
Dispose of the applicator according to the manufactuer's instructions.
When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawl strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet.
Tips:
Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon with a water-based lubricant such as K-Y Jelly can make insertion easier the first few times. Don't use petroleum jelly.
Always read the manufactuer's instructions throughly before using any type of tampon.
If the tampon feels uncomfortable it is probably not inserted far enough into your vagina. Try again with a new tampon."

Relax and fake cough while you are pushing it in... that will relax your muscles and make it easier. Also make sure you are getting the slim kind (sometimes have the word teen or slim fit on the box). You can also lubricate it a little bit with a water based lubricant like k-y jelly... but if you do that, only put the lube on the applicator (cardboard or plastic part) and not the tampon itself.

i used to have the same problem and it is so annoying.
all you do is relax put your leg up on to the toilet or bath and push the bottom part of the applicator in and the tampon with go in but make sure you push it in that slight bit extra your self because if the tampon is not in properly it can be very painfull and annoying.
you will get used to them its just they are a newsense when learning.
good luck

no offense to mom of 3 but i understand it can be really embarassing asking your mom bout something bout that. my advice would be. wen your just getting started using tampons... stand up and put one foot up in the top of the toilet so your leggs are spreaded wide and slowly but gently slide it in until you get to the bottom of the 1st section of the tampon were the little design is to hold it, hold it there with one hand and with the other hand push the bottom of it up. it will feel weird at first. then pull out the aplicator wrap it up and throw it away. good luck!

It does take a little practice, i remember when i first used them, the ones with applicators are the best. take your time and follow the instructions carefully. Relax when you are doing it. You'll know when its in place as you won't be able to feel. Good luck, i'm with you on this one as i remember being in the same situation as you.

were you having problems getting the applicator into your vagina or the tampon out of the applicator? remember, hold the applicator by the fingergrips and push the applicator in until your fingers touch your body. then push the tampon out of the applicator by pushing the smaller tube into the larger tube. don't start pushing out the tampon until you push the applicator in your vagina up to the grips.

the cardboard ones have a tendency to stick to your skin. Try the plastic ones. Also your your hands as dry as possible because a lot of moisture makes them slippery and hard to push in.
