I drove to pick up a friend and waited for him 10 minutes with the car running and the air-con on. When he got in the car, I put it in reverse and the car stalled. When I tried to restart there was a clicking noise. I tested the radio, lights and horn, all good. I checked the fuse box and the was a fuse marked "ignition". I pulled it, looked good and swapped it anyway with the interior light (both 20). I tried again and same thing. The car was inspected last week.

Thanks for any help

The clicking sound could be a weak battery. The noise is made when the Bendix is pulled in but there is not enough juice to turn the starter and the drain on voltage releases the Bendix and once it does, then it tries to energize again. check the battery, alternator, and finally the starter. The first thing to check is for dirty battery terminals. That would do it too.

sounds like a weak battery. You could try jumping the battery with another car to get it started. Best way to test is to get a Voltage meter and see if the battery is at 12 volts. If its not, then either its time for the battery to be replaced or the charging system in not working correctly. If it reads 12 volts, then have someone start the car, the voltage should not drop below 9 volts, if it does, then the battery is still most likely the problem.

If you don't have a volt meter, then you can try doing the same test with the headlights on and see how much they dim.

If you know that the battery is 5 years old or more, then its probably the battery. It could be the starter but they usually last quite a long time (100k miles).

Accessaries like the A/C and the blower motor drain the battery when on and if it (the battery) is at the end of its service life, quite often the warranty period, it died on you. Better now than in the dead of winter.

Not much else you can do except, first, clean the battery cable connections and then try to jump it and then drive it to a auto parts store. They can test it for you.

Good Luck!

It sounds like your alternator went out, and then your battery got discharged, hence the clicking sound (low battery). It doers not take much juice to run your radio or lights, but your starter does require alot of power to crank the engine over.

bttery is not holdin/ recieving the propper charge. jump start the car and then remove the battery cables and allow the car to runn with out any battery being hooked up. if it continues to run your altenator is fine. if not replace the alternator. if the alternator is not the culprit the battery may be bad. also check the voltag regulator.

That is a battery low on power or a sticking starter solenoid for sure.

sound like the starter burned out or it could be the alternator then you will have to get a new battery

it may be your starter not a fuse.
