okay. i have a good fastball and a decent curve but since im righty, leftys tend to tear up my curve when its pretty effective aginst rightys. i found this out 2 years ago and since then ive been working hard on a good offspeed pitch to throw to leftys. i chose a screwball. ive been working at it for some time and its actualy getting there. in practice and such ive thrown it and its worked but my coach keeps saying "theres no way you can throw that pitch" and my catcher wont ever call for it in a game. what can i do to make them realize i can oitch that pitch? btw im not some little leauger that thinks he can throw a zillion pitches. i play competitive high school and travel baseball.

A CB to a lefty is like lunch for them...it breaks down to their swing.

A screwball is a tough pitch, and can be horrible on your arm. Learn a splitter. It's an easy pitch to learn, but takes a lot of work to command it.

If thrown properly, there is no strain on your arm.

I am a pitching coach for a 6A HS program in Florida, and I have taught 2 of my pitchers to throw one, and both dominate lefties & righties with it.

As I'm sure you know, Cole Hamels is very effective with his changeup. Look at his record so far this season. He has 10 wins without a screwball. Listen to what some of the previous people have said, and stay away from it. Throwing that pitch will ruin your arm over time, especially at your age. Learn and then master the art of the changeup. You throw it with the same motion as a fastball, but the grip is different. The arm action deceives the hitter because it comes out of your hand looking like a fastball. Like anything else, it may take some time, but it will come around and you'll see how effective it can be. Go get 'em son.

I agree with every poster that said don't throw a screwball: DON'T!!!

Pitching is such an unnatural motion for your arm in the first place, you don't need to add additional stress to your wrist by incorporating a screwball into your repetoire.

Instead of trying to find a new pitch, concentrate on new ways to pitch to hitters. Good pitchers are those that know how to work hitters, not those that have nasty curveballs or screwballs. Look at every good pitcher that's ever made an impact: placement, knowing the hitter, working the count--that's what will make you a good pitcher.

It is really difficult for a young player to develop a good screwball, and it really is bad for your arm. Even in MLB you don't see that pitch much any more. I coached youth baseball for many years and would never allow any of my pitchers to work on that pitch, it is a waste of time. Work on your fastball and an off speed pitch so the hitter won't sit on your fastball. If you can't get hitters out with those two good pitches I suggest you play another position if you enjoy playing the game.

screwball. high school

son you wont make it out of high school alive throwing that

throw a changeup. your coach is right and your catcher is smart. your wrist will be destroyed after throwing that pitch at such a young age.

Christy Matthewson said he would only throw it maybe 20 times a season because it puts so much strain on your arm

do yourself a favor. if you wanna be able to throw a ball to your kids, get rid of the screwball

my advice? Dont throw a screwball!!! It screws up your arm. Hence the name screwball. Listen, i know this guy who kept throwing a screwball and he completely destroyed his arm. Try a modified knucklecurve. Place your fingers on the ball like a fastball. Then take your pointer finger and dig it into the seam of the ball and throw it with a downward motion on your wrist. It works.

Well im sure you guys practice or even when your warming up call the coach over and show him you could repeatedly through that pitch for a strike, and get a catcher who could catch it that way it doesn't look like a wild pitch. And believe me I'm a lefty that pitch would suck to hit just don't leave it hanging try and get it low and inside

not to ruin your dreams but a screwball will kill your arm. you could seriously ruin your elbow and it would cost money for surgery. i think you should learn to throw a slider or splitter. or you could learn both. they are very effective pitches.
