Not an answer to your question as such, but a brief story I thought I might share.

About 11/12 years ago I was working in a bureau-de-change in the Eurostar terminal at Waterloo. This American chap (younger than me) came up and gave me some French Francs and said, "I wanna change this funny money into English dollars, or whatever you call the money in this little country of yours."
All I could do was look at him with the straightest face, and say in the calmest voice "The currency in this country is called the pound sterling, sir. And this little country of ours is called England. And it was around a hell of a long time before the good ol' U S of A."

I then proceeded to short-change him big time, by the way.
And the fool didn't have a clue.

Almost all countries encourage nationalism to some extent. Americans, however, do seem to take the cake in lack of consideration for any other nation as a peer. We are taught that the US is the best country in the world - "Every day we’re told that we live in the greatest country on earth. And it’s always stated as an undeniable fact: Leos were born between July 23 and August 22, fitted queen-size sheets measure sixty by eighty inches, and America is the greatest country on earth. Having grown up with this in our ears, it’s startling to realize that other countries have nationalistic slogans of their own, none of which are ‘We’re number two!’." - David Sedaris, Me Talk Pretty One Day

I don't know what can be done about it, aside from, as always, expect the rest of the world to just roll their eyes at an dismiss us.

They look at the world through rose tinted glasses, are largely ignorant of the rest of the world, and deride any of their countrymen who has actually got a decent concept of the world as a left wing Commie sympathiser.

It's ok, America. We'll just keep sorting out your crap. I don't think you've won a war that Britain hasn't been involved in, so it's obvious that you can't be allowed to do anything on your own.
Remember, bigger is not always better. Americans would do well to remember that.

Of course, what most Americans seem to forget is that a lot of them are descended from those Europeans who couldn't get ahead in their own country so they headed for a visit to Ellis Island. Remember, America, you are descended from people not smart enough to get ahead in an established country.
And you still think you're great.
No wonder psychiatrists are so rich over there, you're all bloody delusional.

I am American, I AM the best thing since sliced bread...I cannot say the same for the present Administration...more like smut-infested wheat was used in the production. It is the only explanation I can come up with for the lunacy of this Government at this time. DO NOT judge Americans by our (unfortunately) Administration. I didn't vote for this bunch of idiots, and those who did have lived to regret it.

Here is the deal, America is the best country in the world. We have on of the best economies and the best military in the world. Most Americans have health care, just a very few percent don't. With any country, if your poor, its hard to work your way up. People who hate America are just jealous that there not from here. Its not to expensive and its huge. There are different climates and your not bound to a small area. Thats my though

If you're English, I think the world will recall a little thing called the BRITISH (FREAKIN') EMPIRE.

If you're not, think about how the English used to act the same way until almost mid-century.

Hardly the first time a country's adopted that attitude.

because unfortunately most of us are ignorant of the rest of the world, our own history, as well as our current state. People who think that live in an isolated bubble where their view is never challenged, they're the same people who think the poor are just lazy.
