Hippos are beieved to make infrasound sounds
When in groups they make drum-beat like sounds that vary in frequency tone and pitch , sometimes being low bass or high pitch.Hippos often will herd in a pool, and then there'd be another pool down the river, maybe two or three kilometers down, and there seems to be an important communication between these groups. Hippos will chorus, these bellows and other sounds, and then you'll hear them way down river being answered by the next herd.

All of these sounds are due to communication and I would guess that they use a difference in tone and pitch depending on what they want the message to be for other herds of hippo.

Most of the time though they just open their big mouth to signal things to rivals like crocs and other hippos without "saying" anything

the sound that hippos make are pretty much similar to what pigs(really big fat ones ) make.
its like burping, only more throaty and louder.
