Yes, it's located in Africa, but it's right across the Gulf from Asia, and that section of Asia is what we call the "Middle East". It also has ethnic and religious ties to the Arab countries of the Middle East. It's also been heavily involved in the affairs of the Middle East ever since WW II. It lead the Arab world in three wars against Israel (getting beat like a drum each and every time) and was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel. That's why it's considered part of the Middle East even though it's technically on the African continent. Hope this helps you understand.

Near east, Middle east and far east are geo-political classifications that were used during the colonial era when the British empire was the empire over which the sun never set...
I've seen many comments but no one occured to him to ask "east of what?" so it is to the east of the british isles and the distance to it determined the label Near, middle or far.
THe name stuck to those countries after the end of the colonial era and unfortunately our region being a volatile one... has its name immortalized by the media people... the middle east became the synonymous to wars and extremism.
As for the location in Africa... it a purely geographical location... Egypt is on the continent of Africa just because it is there... and is unmovable... so I guess it will be there for a while to come...
I think to avoid some of the "lets say funnier" comments you should refrase your question to something like what is the difference between belonging to the middle east and africa or Asia? ;-)
Have a nice day

Because Africa just simply is the continent that Egypt is on. Even though the nation is closer in relations to Southwest Asia which makes up most of the Middle East, being a Muslim nation and all, it is geographically an African nation. Of course, that pretty much also goes for Northern Africa in general.

The Middle East is a region, while Africa is a continent. Most of the countries in the Middle East are actually on the continent of Asia (with the exception of Egypt and Turkey, which is partially in Southeastern Europe).

Thank God that common sense mentioned it was humour. I thought there is a new book has this theory, It happens all the time.
Middle East doesn't mean middle of the east side really. It's called [ Geopolitical ] that means these regions were not named according to geography. It's similar to Giza and the capital Cairo if you know Egypt lol.
According to my [ Geo-historic ] theory Egypt is in the exact middle of the world. Like it or not it's my theory and all my rights reserved to Wise Heart 7 - 2007

Thousands of years ago, Egypt used to sit just North of Siberia. This was a very cold climate with 6 months of winter. As much of the population grew older and unable to deal with the cold weather anymore, some Egyptians migrated to Africa for the winter. The people loved North Africa very much. Surrounded by oceans and rivers, pyramids and a much warmer drier climate, many chose not to return to Siberia at the end of their vacation. They set up communities, schools, businesses, established governments, etc. Each year more Egyptians moved to Africa and decided to stay, until eventually 99.999% of the population had relocated to North Africa. Today, a mere .0000000001% of native Egyptians remain in Siberia.

for the same reason Turkey, Israel and Iraq are in Asia but considered Middle East, or Mexico and Guatemala are in North America but considered Central American....
Middle East, Central American, Far East are all cultural or historical labels......continents are continents and are geographical and only change over 10's of millions of years
