Since with AT&T you get a modem with the package I would just use it. If you want additional machines you can also ADD a router. Any standard DSL/Cable router will work. If you received a 2Wire unit it has a wireless router and four port wired system builtin. So why would you want to use another modem.. it would work the same? If you want to you can but you will need to contact Tech Support for assistance to get it to work.

The very small amount of money you might save by buying a modem from another vendor is probably not worth the money in terms of the inconvenience of getting support from AT&T if something went wrong.. AT&T has a lot of customers, so the wireless modem they recommend should be pretty good, and $30 after rebate is pretty good money.. They will refuse to support any other modem, you can bet your life..

You can potentially use modems/routers from other manufacturers, but you would need to work with technical support at ATT in order to configure it correctly, also so that they can configure their systems to work correctly with your equipment.
Be prepared though, chances are they will tell you it won't work. Best to ask them before committing to a purchase.

You can use your own modem. But you must notify your ISP about your modem's MAC address. Otherwise, you won't be able to access internet. Good Luck,
