Because he could not play defense. He did not know how to take a pitch. If it was thrown he would swing at it. They got Alex Rodriguez in return. I think the Yankees got the better of that deal. Soriano is on his third team since he was a Yankee. Now that he is a Cub he will never win a championship.

When you have a chance to acquire A-Rod AND have a team pay a third of his salary you are a little more willing part with a player like Soriano. Besides, he was playing 2B at the time, his defense was atrocious and he did not want to move to the OF. Still, there's no arguing that he is an absolute stud but that said he's still not in the same category as A-Rod.

Because they got Alex Rodriguez in the trade. Soriano is great...but he is a free swinger...does not walk much, and is not a .300 hitter. While he is a great player, you cannot argue with dealing him to pick up the best all around player in the major leagues.
At the time, A-Rod was regularly hitting .330, with 45 to 50 HR's and 140 RBI's.
I love Soriano, and was sad to see him go...but when you have a chance to land the best, it's hard to argue.

They traded him so they could get Alex Rodriguez, one of the greatest players of this generation.
Soriano is the player Texas wanted in that deal, and the Yankees didn't have a yawning hole at second base. Soriano has turned into an All-Star player, but that was still a great deal for the Yanks.

To get Alex Rodriguez who is the better player of the two. Plus Soriano was reluctant about the idea of moving to the OF when he was in NY. He was terrible at second and struck out too much.

They traded him to get A-Rod. Remember, A-Rod was with the Rangers and the Yankees traded Soriano, among other things, to get him. Of course, right before that happened, A-Rod was going to be traded to Boston, but it wouldn't be approved because they would have had to restructure his contract.... To that rach_campo guy, what the hell are you talking about? A-Rod was a SS when he came to the Yankees. He was asked to move to third so Jeter could stay at SS.

he wanted a lot of $$$$, and the yankees thought they were set at 2B. They were wrong. He should not have been traded by the yankees and in my opinion, soriano is the best player the yankees have ever given up.

because the Yankees suck....
...Cashman knows nothing about baseball... Buck Showalter built those championship teams in the 90's and torre managed them... the boss is a stubborn moron.. and at the time a rod was the best player in the baseball egg head's opinions.... plus the red sox tried to get a rod and if the red sox do it the the yankees have to try to do it... why do you think they have kei igawa?... carl pavano?....nice one guys!
really tho:
soriano is a free swinger and a rod works counts and hits homers.. moneyball was the dominate baseball philosophy at the time... no one cared about steroids they cared about home runs.....

I love the way the first 10 Yankee fans had no clue, then one guy says to get A-Rod, and now hours later, people come back with "to get A-Rod, remember" as their answer.
