I look for the plot to be fresh and interesting without so much boring narration bogging it down or boring characters or forgettable scenes. Subject matter has to be something that would interest the reader. If it's for school, especially high school, the subject matter or theme behind the novel would have to be something that would make good classroom discussion, for questions, essays, small projects, etc.
For example, in "April Raintree," (a novel penned by a Metis author named Beatrice Culleton, who comes from my home province of Manitoba) we discussed to role of Native Canadians in our society, and their relationships with white people. The novel itself was about a young Metis woman (title character) in search of her identity; she could pass off as white while her darker-skinned sister waves her Native heritage proudly like a banner. In another novel I studied, "The Stone Angel" (by another Manitoba author named Margaret Laurence) we discussed the role of seniors in society, basically. This novel was about a 90-year-old woman who reflects on her life as she is dying.
That's all I have to say. Hope you've been informed.

Sex, lies and video tape for evidence!
The good, the bad and the extremly ugly. The more ugly the situation is the more gross it sounds the better the publics take to it. Gullable lot and swallow a lotta ****!
Young adults, be responsible and stay at school for the longest time ever and learn as much as possible while you can. Once you begin the working lark you probly think you've gained alot but you lost it all too. There are more thieves and scoundrels in the working place than there are working places. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. If its mixed with emotions then don't stir - Joe Public will conquer that lot for ya - think before you breathe and try to enjoy life and all the rediculous belief systems that man actually is.
Last but not least, have some fun. If you can't be good then be educated.

Young adults usually are going through a stage in their lives where they are trying to find themselves. So a story about a young adult finding themselves will be great.
Examples are - The Devil Wears Prada, Legally Blonde, Spiderman
It also has to have a sub plot, to tie in the story. Mystery is the best way to reel in your readers, make them WANT to know whats going to happen. Take desperate housewives and lost, we watch all the time because we want to know whats going on. Start the story with an unexplained secret!
Also, dont put pen to paper until you know your story, it must have a start middle and end. And a GOOD ending.

All stories have a basic question that needs to be answered:
- Will Jonah get out of the whale?
- Will Harry Potter be able to defeat Lord Voldemort?
- etc.
You need to adress this question, and reveal a little bit of the answer as you go along. Little unexpected twists and turns are always good. And because it's for young adults, a little romance and comedy are always good too!
