We bought a set but it is deadly, it is small but the diamond is set higher up off the ring and it cut my children a few times. So I bought just a band of tiny diamonds to replace it for the time being, it was only like $60. So we are going to buy me a nicer set when we can afford it and I am getting black diamonds instead of regular because black is my favorite color.

A lot of men feel that way. They feel the ring they put on their wifes finger is a reflection on how much he loves her. That is silly, of course, but for most men, it's out of love for the woman, not bragging intent. They want to give their future wife the best that they can. That said, why not opt for a smaller, but higher quality diamond or colored stone? Whether it be a traditional diamond, or if you wanted a ruby or sapphire (really the only other stones durable enough for an engagement ring beyond diamond), just because it's small doesn't mean it needs to be bottom of the barrel. There is this thing in marriage called compromise, and it doesn't just start after you say "I do". He wants to put the best ring he can on your finger, and you would like that ring to be small. So, explain your reasoning behind wanting a smaller ring (you have petite fingers and a big ring would over power them, it would get in the way of your job ect....). Suggest he get a diamond with top color and clarity (D,E,F color, F, IF, VVS clarity) or a ideal color, untreated (most colored stones are heat treated), clean of inclusion color stone, and go with a understated setting. They will still cost quite a bit of money, he can still feel good he put a "perfect stone" on your finger, and you can have a smaller ring.

mine is a little less than a carat... not big,but its a solitaire, so its worth more ( 1 carat in one stone is worth more than 1 1/2 carats total in several stones.) plus its a round brilliant, so it has more light facets ( more light facets, more sparkle, brighter color) and its a flawless ( no inclusions...quality is worth more than quantity. I'd rather have a smaller brighter stone than a bigger duller one.) I'm glad you trusted you, and not what some jeweler thinks. they work on commission, so of course they want you to get the more expensive one! and congrats!

Actually I got an engagement necklace... which looks like this:
http://www.blueridgespirit.com/images/dolphin_necklace1004_lg.jpg
Their eyes were a small diamond... and it was an 18 carat white gold...
It was a surprise from hubby... n it meant alot... cz we first met eachother in a coffee shop named dolphin :D
OVERALL... I like things that are small... they seem to be more delicate when they're small...

My engagement ring is Indian style, a bit like this, only better. This is the only pic I could find. It is this shape, but the design is alot nicer than in this pic:
