The Earth's path is in an elliptical orbit around our star which we call the sun. The earth's orbit around the sun is nearly circular, so that the difference between Earth's farthest point from the Sun and its closest point is very small, as it travels within the boundaries of a two-dimensional plane which we call the ecliptic. Even moving at 67,000 miles per hour, it takes over 365 days for Earth to circumnavigate the sun, which is of course, how we define our "year."
