Id do the smae and scare the s*** out of him. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. I would never back down, or just be dragged down.

If you have any inkling that the thought is real and not the often idle "I'm gonna kill you" after losing a nickel bet, I would go the the police to report it and to get an application for the purchase of a handgun (if I did not own one already) and an application to carry it. Once the weapon is obtained, I would find someone to teach me how to use it safely and accurately (assuming that I was not already trained in this) and put in a lot of practice at a range. And remember that any time you carry, you are not allowed any alcohol. None.
