So my husband and I are thinking about having another baby (we have a 2 yr. old daughter). The other day I came across a site that was discussing chicken pox and the very harmful effects they can have on pregnant women and their babies. Well, I don't know if I've ever had chicken pox, I don't remember having them and my mom isn't sure, she thinks so but can't remember either. There is a simple blood test I can do to find out if I am immune to them or not but it's kinda pricey and insurance won't cover it. Do you think I'm being overly cautious, or should I go ahead and do the blood test?

I know with my first pregnancy they checked for MMR and I was immune, but I don't think they checked for varicella...

I have never had the chicken pox and it was never a concern to me when I became pregnant. Are you around children often? Even if you are most children these days receive the vaccine. If by this time you haven't gotten chicken pox, you might have already had it or have a natural immunity to it.

I think you are being overly cautious but that is okay, we all have things that we are sensitive about. I think if you want to get a blood test to see, go ahead. Or just go get a vaccine for it, that would be cheaper. Plus the vaccine might be medically covered. I really don't believe you need either but if it makes you feel at ease then do so. You do not need to unnecessarily worry about it especially if you get pregnant.

I would talk to your doctor about this. Is the risks of you harming yourself and the baby is high and you are really unsure you should take the blood test.

Or maybe you could get the chicken pox vac before getting pregnant. Not sure if it works in the adult years, but again speak with your doctor.

Intresting fear, I've never heard of someone not knowing if they had chicken pox (I got them 2 times, lovely).

Good luck in your research.

You should have the test. I think your Mom would remember if you had had the chicken pox. It's kind of a big deal. Or, you could assume you haven't had them and deal with that too.

When I had the chickenpox immunity blood screen about 6 months ago it cost me $23 and insurance didn't pay for it. If you've been given a very high price then check out other hospitals and labs and I bet you'll find a better rate.

I have been given pregnant with #2 while #a million became approximately 7 months previous. We have been waiting and % our young toddlers close in age. The wellness care expert pronounced each and every thing regarded good and healthful and that there became no reason to attend if we did not % too... so we did not.

it wouldn't even cross my mind as something to worry about.
avoid children with chicken pox until after your baby is born, or try to expose your 2 yr old before you get pregnant.
