The suggestions already made are good. But in 5-7 days you have a lot more choices!

You could go to the Gold Country, the Sierra Foothills, and walk around old towns from the 1850s and go antiquing and visit historical sites.

You could go camping in the redwoods, drive the Avenue of the Giants, and spend a day shopping in Victorian Ferndale, and even perhaps come back down through the Lost Coast. Maybe camp along the coast too. You could spend a day in Mendocino and see the Russian fort at Fort Ross. Or go through the Wine Country on the way back and go wine tasting.

You could go camping at Big Basin and/or Sequoiah Nat'l Parks.

You could go over the Sierras to Mono Lake, and see Bodie, the cool old ghost town.

You could go to Reno, lots to see there, maybe spend a day or two at Lake Tahoe.

You could get some people together and rent a houseboat on Folsom Lake. (I say get people together because it's kind of expensive, but there's room for like 6 people to share expenses.)

Just some ideas. California has a great diversity of geography, a wide variety of things to see and do within a day or two's drive from San Jose.

Go check out Monterey and Pacific Grove- the bay is beautiful, and that area has some of the best hiking and biking around. There are also extensive outlet malls in around both Monterey and Gilroy, if shopping is your thing. Monterey has the Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as some great places to eat. A little further south down Highway 1 is Pebble Beach, with its famous golf course and the legendary 17 Mile Drive. Lastly, if you are looking for a place to stay that is quiet, has lots of walking and beach access, and is also close to Monterey, then check out the Asilomar state conference center and park. This is a self contained, state owned resort and conference center which is right on the bay- and it's like a summer camp for adults !!! I love Asilomar- I have stayed there several times, and it's a great place for a getaway or vacation !!! Hope this helps.

You need to go to the monterey area and drive the 17 mile drive that goes past pebble beach golf course and other famous places along with some of the most beautiful scenery and biggest houses in Cali. You also need to go to Point Lobos which is a state park with some of the best rocky shores around.

If you want to drive about 3 hours farther south on the 1 you can go to Hearst Castle in San Simeon. It is amazing if you have never been there, even if you have there are about 3 different tours of the place all of them great.

Agree with the others. Also drive down to Pinnacles National Monument and hike. Walk all around Pacific Grove. Go to the Point Sur Lighthouse and then to the State Parks along Hwy 1. You'll enjoy a week in the area around Monterey/Big Sur

If it was me, I'd do one big circle. Spend a couple of days along the coast in Monterey and Santa Cruz, then head east and make for Gold Country and places like Columbia State Park, Jamestown, and places around highway 49. After a couple days there, head back towards the North Bay and spend some time in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

Everyone has great ideas, my fav spots are in Monterey & Carmel. Check out their CVB I added a link below.

Also up north, I have family that live in San Andreas its a really small town, and about 2 1/2 hr drive from San Jose. Around that area are lots of places to go, Angels Camp home of the Frog Jump, Sutter Creek, and lots of caves and really cool places to go exploring. I have also listed other links for you.

I have been to Mercer Caverns. Be Sure to wear good walking/hiking shoes and not be afraid of walking down stairs. :)

Have fun!!! :)

But if you have a room booked they are Great with packages for all the places that have been mentioned.and you get better deals. but most of all there is more to do than you can don't wear your self out. have fun. I live by San Simeon they have 5 tours now and evening tours cooler temps than inland.

You can certainly spend a week in the Monterey peninsula, picking up the right activities depending on the kids/familly factor.
Look at the Big Sur/Moneterey/Carmel part of the following itinerary: http://www.tripwiser.com/trip_planner-California_USA_California_Adventure_Road_Trip?TripId=402880820e2159f8010e2827df0f7c92
and research that site to look for additional activities.
(I live an hour away...)

Monterey or Santa Cruz beach. Both are a good choice. Monterey bay also has a beautiful aquarium you can visit.

I know they have a nice hotel in Santa Row (across from valley fair shopping mall). They have a lot of clubs, good restaurants, and shops around the area. Just search Hotel Valencia Santa Row on google and it will show you the hotel.
