I've been having major trouble gettin my internet working properly. My crappy cable company says my signal is fine but our computers keep getting randomly kicked offline. We have a Linksys wireless Cable Gateway that is setup for the 2 computers. Both our computers are practically brand new so it can't be that. What could it be? And what are any possible good web sites that can aid with this problem. I'm not great with computers by the way so please don't get too technical with the dialogue. Thanks.

Odds are it's your firewall settings on the machines, assuming your using a personal firewall (comes with most antivirus software). You were probably requested to grant or deny access to a particular file wishing to access the Internet, which you denied and shouldn't have (win32.exe is a common example).

Try resetting your personal firewall back to it's default settings.

If you own that gateway, your best bet for troubleshooting is Linksys. Call them at 800 326 7114.

If you are leasing it from your cable company, then you are probably a home networking (they may call it small business) customer. In this case, they can help troubleshoot it, but it would be helpful to them if at least one of those PCs was temporarily wired to the gateway, preferably using an ethernet cable (which looks like a telephone cord, but it's slightly larger). This would help determine if the problem was background interference with the wireless signal.

You can also try moving at least one of those PCs to a different place in the room or the house; this would help determine if you're having signal degradation due to too many large objects (walls, heavy or tall furniture, etc.) between that PC and the router. If that's the case, you can try an aftermarket booster antenna; Linksys makes them.

Good luck!

Could also be signal strength on the wireless connection is poor or getting confused with another local signal.

Might want to have a techie savvy person take a look at your wireless setup. If someone else has a wireless setup close by it might be confusing your comps thus causing them them dump offline when the other person's wireless is in use.

If you could get at least one of the systems on a wired connection, that might solve 50% of your problems!

you say you have a wireless router, are you connecting wireless or with a wire from your router to your computer....if you are connecting wireless do you have things like cell phones, cordless phones, microwaves, sound systems, etc near the pc or the router...if so this could easily be the cause, however more details would be needed to know better...if you like send me an email detailing about when you are disconnected, can you simply not access the net, does a lil box popup and say you are disconnected etc

this is been taking place to me for style of two weeks now. After being on the telephone with at&t over an hour some circumstances.....I incredibly have the code to get right of entry to my modem and restart it myself. I try this from the pc and not on the actually modem itself. It takes me 5 min to repair the subject....nevertheless stressful!!!
