they actually belive now that alot of genius had a form of autism, as an autistic child/adult can be brilliant at something that others are not, years ago autism was not known about and people just passed certain traits in people as just crazy, like the old mad professor that you had at university, my little boy has autism he is 8 and he can bounce a ball with one hand all day without even looking at the ball he also walks around while still bouncing it, but he cannot write, read, dress himself etc, they believe that Einstein had a form of autism as did a lot of great piano players, and there are some young adults with autism that are being hailed as great concert piano players even now.

G.K. Chesterton said in his book "Orthodoxy" that it is the extreme, logical thinker that is most likely to go insane. The logical thinker spends their life attempting to explain EVERYTHING using logic while others just let mysteries be mysteries. The end result is madness because they can come nowhere near answering the infinite unknowns that l make up our universe. He summed it up by saying (this is not an exact correct quote)...
"While the artistic thinker attempts to get his head into the heavens, the logical thinker tries to fit the heavens into his head resulting in a mental explosion."
The actual quote is ten times better but that's the gist of it.

George Bernard Shaw said that all progress is made by ridiculous people because they refuse to conform to the world.
Sanity isn't conformity of thought, which is pretty deluded. Sanity is mental health. There are side-effects to being a genius, they can be alienated or seem crazy, but they make the most profound contributions to human understanding.

Well I think that society cannot connect with them and they feel isolated. This might escalate mental illness. I personally don't think "insane" is appropriate to say or the other term, as this is a form of suffering, and just because one cannot see it, or understand it, it does not mean they are defective or any les defunct as a person.
Higher intelligence, can often lead to burnout also. Hence "breakdowns", another derogatory term...

It could be because people who are not on the same wavelength as them, have difficulty understanding them and they are then perceived as insane.
In the olden days, they were put in prison as the authorities did not understand them. Or shall I say they were ignorant. They were busy abiding by the norms and values of the bible as it was thought that was true knowledge.

I would guess it is because they are usually perfectionists, who want the finest fulfilment of their talents. Perfectionists are usually quite psychologically brittle people, and when their talents occasionally don't get fulfilled, it can drive them over the edge into some degree of insanity.

Part of it may be that you simply don't understand what they do or why. Just because it's beyond most peoples' comprehension doesn't necessarily mean that this smart person is insane.
Although, they might go insane trying to explain it to people who can't understand.

i think of basically somewhat the two.... genius is usually bordering on insane. case in point, Albert Einstein. the guy discovered the fee of sunshine, theory of relativity, and so on... yet didnt bathe or positioned on socks generally. Van Gogh is yet another great occasion of this. so ya, basically somewhat the two .

I guess because they see the world in a different way to the rest of us and because they're so focussed on what might be - instead of what is - they become a bit too wrapped up themselves.
