I have geothermal heating and cooling. Now, when we bought the house they told us the best thing to do is leave the a/c on auto, keep windows doors closed and leave the temperature alone. When you adjust it and turn it on and off, you are making it work harder to get back up or down to the right temp. SO this is what Ive been doing. Seems to work well, keeps costs low. Do you agree or should I try opening the windows on cooler days?

Geothermal uses the relative constant temperature of the ground as a "reservoir" to exchange heat or cold with. So, when your system is set to 'auto' it automatically switch between heat and cold to keep your room temperature relatively constant to the ground temperature. So, you feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter. By opening your windows, you are opening the "system loop" that keeps the system functioning. It is more efficient just keep the system loop closed.

I believe you have a heat pump. At a certain depth below the surface the temperature is unaffected by events on the surface. I would do as they recommend. You know the old saying, "If it ain't broke, break it". or was that "don't break it"?
