apple is expensive. sony is expensive. ibm makes the cheap lenovos. dell is relatively cheap and decent, it is known for it's customer support/warranty. Hp is mediocre. toshiba is overpriced for what they are. i'd say look at website where you can customize the specs, then also look up onlin cpupons/discount codes. the best buy for your money would be a customized asus laptop, but you get little support from company. I'd say go dell or ibm

It honestly depends on what you plan on doing not only now but in the future.

You basically have 2 options for platforms.
MAC or WINDOWS

personally I wouldn't recomment IBM or SONY. Only reason is Sony you are just paying for the name and IBMs i have heard plenty of issues that spring up.

So limiting it down to Dell, HP, Toshiba, and APPLE.

For apple if you plan on doing multimedia or graphics it is worth it. Besides that you are going to run into software trouble some where along the way (obtaining it). You will hear that Macs can run BootCamp which they can, but it doesn't run 100% correct on the mac. The other thing you will hear is that Macs are virus free.. not really it is just the virus makers don't attack the minority. "Why make a virus that can stop 200 pcs when you can make one that stops 2000"

Honestly Toshiba, HP, and DELL are preferences. I own both Toshiba and DELL. HP makes wonderful PCs but their tech support is god awful 3rd world country. So that is why I went Toshiba and Dell.

Dell you can make a REALLY good custom Laptop-PC for about 800. It will easily suite your needs then you can save the extra 199 for something else. Their tech support is really good and if something goes wrong they have replaced it for me without any questions.

Toshiba I chose because I found a good deal on sale and i have heard they take a good beating. Not to mention their systems seem to coordinate with all other parts at pretty good speeds.

So it is up to you. I recommend a Dell (custom built by you) or a Toshiba.

You can get a Macbook for $999 on the Apple website with all the software you need and wifi ready, if you are a student. For whatever reason, whether there are fewer Macs or what, there are no viruses out there attacking Macs. Look at all the questions on Yahoo from people who think they have a computer virus, or their virus software isn't working, you don't have that with a Mac. It also has the top rated tech support. You won't be talking to people in India...

It really depends on what you want to get out of it. I used to have a Vaio, which stopped working after a few years. Its fan broke, overheated, had "memory dumps" and couldn't hold a charge. HP is pretty good for gaming i think. Never cared for Dell. Apple is good for like work stuff. And I have an Acer, which I love, and was cheap and tiny and can play most not-too-hardcore games. It was an x1800 Aspire PC with windows 7 and 4gig ram and 700 gigabytes of hard drive space. It was only $500.

Well...it really depends on what you want...a MacBook is a good suggestion but most people who have grown up using Windows really can't get use to the OS that Mac's use...plus the lack of program support...but for something such as just typing out papers...internet usages...and some video/picture editing MacBooks are great...

As far as brands go...most people will tell you to stick with the better known companies such as Dell and Sony...the best thing to really do is just go out to your local Circuit City...or Best Buy...and just test the computers...see which one fits your needs the best

Toshiba makes the best laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092, and I love it. I would highly recommend it.

An Apple computer would be the best computer for your money and is well worth the few extra dollars.
