I'm pretty sure freedom of Religion was a big thing, and they were offering free land to anyone who came so that was enticing to those who were poor.

It was also a good way to provide for and dispose of younger sons of the aristocracy. For those who came, it truly was a way to escape religious persecution (Some of my family were Quakers who came to Maryland with the Catholic Lord Calvert, because their religion brought them into conflict with the established church). The latter reason also appealed to the English crown, since it got the religious resistance moved to another country, geographically, at a time when the religious deviants were potential agents of other powers, such as the Spanish. I could probably give several other reasons, but you said one.

Based on what I've read about the colonies, one of the biggest reasons that they migrated was the desire for religious freedom.

Another key idea that led to their migration was the opportunity to evangelize the natives, though this was more obvious in the Spanish colonies than in the English ones.
