A guy friend, who I've known for about a year now, but have only actually seen him 4 or 5 times in the last year, and I took a walk from downtown Vegas to the Stratosphere at around 12:30-1 in the morning.
My sister had gotten married on 07-07-07. He was the best man in the wedding, so this has nothing to do with his trust or walking with him. I hung out with him a lot while we were there; unfortunately, it didn't lead to anything else, which is another story in itself. It just has to do with taking the walk.
When my mom found out, she didn't yell at me but pretty much told me it was a stupid thing to do because that's a really unsafe part of town. He's 28, I'm 26, so it's not like we're kids. It didn't seem to be that bad. We saw a couple of crazy people but nothing that really scared me.

I've driven in that area, but never walked in that area because, as your mom has told you, it is an unsafe area of town. Doesn't matter whether or not you are kids.

No, I don't think you're crazy. That's not such a risky walk, especially if you're with a guy. Downtown Vegas isn't exactly the greatest spot in Las Vegas, but 12:30 AM in Vegas is like 9 PM in any other city, since it's just the beginning of the night there. Your mom has to tell you that was a stupid thing to do, because she's your mom, and would be pretty lame if she didn't care about you walking in a questionable area after midnight. But you and your friend are definitely old enough to walk where you want to and be cautious.

I've walked that plenty of times with my friends and I never even knew it was such a horrible part of town that everyone says it is. If you really think about it and compare it to the REAL bad neighborhoods of say, LA or New York, or even San Francisco, its a real walk in the park.
Like you said, you guys are grown adults, and Vegas being a city that never sleeps pretty much has people all around. I do admit though that the area is less glittery and marginally unsafe (especially compared to the STRIP), but you guys were just talking and walking - nothing crazy at all.
Hope you work something out with that guy that you walked with. Hope this helps, or adds to your peace of mind.

The Stratosphere is not in a nice neighborhood. The crazies in Vegas are always out . Vegas is a dangerous place. You must pay attention to where and what you are doing in Vegas. You could have very easily been assaulted/ shot. No, I'm not kidding. This is not a place to come and think nothing bad is going to happen, especially if you are not paying attention.

You could've hitched a ride with me...we were leaving that same time from Fremont Street and we went to the Stratosphere right after that. Yeah, It really wasn't the best thing to do. There is a little part right through there that's a little questionable. There were people hanging out at the Bank of America building when we were getting cash and also at a jiffy store that we stopped at.

Maybe not crazy but definitely not smart - its a very risky area and having a guy with you doesn't make you safe, just means there were two of you at risk instead of one.
Age has nothing to do with it - in fact, kids are less likely to be mugged because they don't carry as much cash. You got lucky - and I think you should listen to your mother more, sounds like she's got a clue.

Yes, you were taking your life into your own hands-that is a very shady part of Vegas! We stayed at the Strat, and when we went to the court house for our marriage license we walked 2 blocks off Las Vegas Blvd. and I was so scared. I was just glad we went at 4 and not later-honey, be careful!

I wouldn't call it crazy but it was certainly unsafe and risky thing to do. Why take the risk? Wasn't there somewhere safer to go? Being with a guy doesn't make it any safer. Guy's get mugged too you know.
