A double hung window is what many people consider to be a regular window.

A double hung has two sashes, one over the other. Both sashes will move up and down, so you can vent from the top or the bottom. If the windows are a tilt window, both will usually tilt in as well but you do have to tilt the lower sash in first.

A single hung is similar, two sashes one over the other, but the top sash does not move. The lower sash slides up and down and optionally tilts in.

A slider is like a single (or double) hung turned sideways. Two sashes, one or both slide back and forth.

A casement is a single sash that cranks out from one side. Casements may be grouped together to make multiple sashes that crank out.

An awning is a casement on it's side, single sash that is hinged at the top and pushes or cranks out at the bottom.

A picture window is a fixed sash that does not open.

A double hung window is one that will open both from the top and bottom and normally is really easy to take out for cleaning. A normal window is one that can possibly open from the top or bottom but will normally not be accessible for cleaning the outside of the window without taking off the screen or a lot of work. If you are replacing windows, i would highly suggest the double hung.

Double hung means you can pull the lower window up or the upper window down. Regular windows only pull up. Double hungs do not always come with the tilt in feature. They can be independent of the other.

A double hung has 2 windows in 1 pane, usually 1 above the other.
A "regular" window would have 1 piece of glass within the pane.
