Isn't the contention that Middle Easterners cannot build a peaceful democracy on their own one of the most bigoted excuses for a military occupation?
If you are a person of good will, you'll support US immediate withdrawal from Iraq. I believe that UN peacekeeping forces should be placed in stead with a very narrow time table and operating at the behest of the Iraqi government and the UN.
The Iraqi people are quite capable of getting things back on track. But first they want their sovereignty. If the US invaded my country, I would make sure no progress occurred until they left. Iraqis want to take credit for their own progress. Please let them be.
Besides, the US troops have committed too many crimes already and the Iraqi people deserve to own their oil. The US should not attempt to kill more people and certainly not privatize the coutnry;s oil.
Leave, and keep good relations.
Do unto other as you would have them do unto you

We went into Iraq on false pretenses and I'm not a believer in well we're there so we might as well finish the job. Staying in my opinion is just compounding the wrong that was done in the first place. Add more troops -- expect more bloodshed. Al Queda wasn't in Iraq before we got there so we are directly responsible for that turn of events. There has always been hatred between the Sunnis and the Shia but our occupation of Iraq has only opened the floodgates and certainly not stemmed the slaughter. The only thing in common between the two groups is that they want us out of there. There are no guarantees that it will work but I say withdraw our troops and bring in a Middle East peacekeeping force including Syria, Iran, Jordan and perhaps a few other neutral countries like Austria and Italy. It's worth the try..

there will not be a real peace anywhere if any kind of war exists anywhere in the world.we create the societies; so society is a reflection of us. if man doesn't self-destruct and in time evolve to become a human being and distribute resources, power and status justly, and legitimately in the world; then a true peace and real happiness will be possible. since the opposite is happening; people will identify with each other and group IE; nation, people "race", gender, etc.

It depends on what you consider paece. There was authoritarian peace under Saddam but if you stepped out of line you disappeared. There can be peace under shiite or Sunni rule but you may be looking at Saddam revisited in a little better than a decade. Or you can wait until the government in place can get a foothold and run it. All of these versions of "peace" are messy but it's what we have.

The Iraqi government has called on the US to remain and help stabilize the country.
I would think they have a better perspective than most so.... I guess the best chance for peace in Iraq is to stay and finish the job we started.

No. The key--which so far no one in Washington is saying publicly--is simple: for the majority of the Iraqi people, this is a war to expel a foreign invader occupying their country, and to overthrow the puppet regime we imposed on them.
Look at history. You do not make peace with people who are motivated in that manner. Not until you leave.

Our soldiers are bringing freedom, freedom is a good indication of peace. So as long as our troops are there, peace will soon follow.

Al quaeda has grown stronger in Iraq since we invaded. The people don't want us there and are happy to pick off our troops one by one until we leave.

There will be no chance of peace if the democrats succeed in pulling us out!!
Like the old saying:
What is started, must be finished!
And oh so true, indeed, we cannot take a chance on failure, for the sake of the safety of our Nation.
