Well I am planning to get a new video card soon. Right now i'm running the wimpy intel 82865 chip. So usally that means that you need a new PSU. I have a dell dimension 4600 which has 250W and a max of 325W right now. The video card I am planning to buy is a GeForce 7600GT 256MB AGP. Apparently you need 400W of power to run this card. Then I saw this forum with this guy who had the same computer as me and the same video card i want. He said he ran the card fine with his stock PSU. Then I saw this website.

It says the graphic card i want only runs 36W? WHAT! Help me. Is it true that I dont really need a PSU or should i get one. Thanks!

The 7600GT has relatively low power requirements, so you *might* be ok... especially with an AGP version.

Here's a website that sells psu upgrades for Dells ( called the silencer series- standard ATX power supplies won't fit the Dell minitower case)

I'd recommend getting the card first and see- if you don't have a 2nd hard drive or more than 1 DVD/CD drive you might sneak by.

See the updated link below for best video cards for AGP- it's a two horse race with the 7600GT and Radeon X1950 Pro depending upon what you want to spend. There's supposedly a G48 in the works which offers DX10 support but I don't think it's available yet..

Whether or not you need a new PSU depends on a few different factors.

First, how many other devices are installed inside the machine? I mean how many hard drives, optical drives, memory sticks, pci cards you have installed?

If you just have the basics that were originally installed, then you should be just fine installing that card.

If you have added a bunch to the computer already, you might want to upgrade the PSU.

Also, the quality of the PSU has a lot to do with it as well. Dell's OEM PSU's are usually not too bad. So you should be ok.

Yeah...now the standard PSU are 400 watt.
better you replace your PSU with better one ( 400 watt ) for the best performance. and make sure you buy the correct one.

For new type of graphic card, its need an additional power. see if the graphic card need those additional power cames with 6 socket from the PSU.
