Salem is a tourist trap. We went there last Fall with high expectations and were let down. You can see pretty much the whole town in 1 day. Some of the places are cheesy but there a few interesting. The town itself is pretty, but just not what I expected. The "Witch House" you would think was where witches lived, not the case. It was actually the house that the Judge lived. Judge Corwin who presided over the famous Salem Witch Trials. Then there is the Witch museum where they do a re-enactment. Some events also took place in nearby Danbury I beleive.
All in all, it is one of those towns to say you been to but I don't want to go back. It did have some cool places to eat though. The food was the most memorable of the whole trip.

The "hunt" took place throughout the town so there isn't an 'exact' spot that you can be pointed to.
The Witch Museum does a good job explaining what happened and what went on.
It is a bit tourist-trap-like with the witch-theme but I've gone back a few times and always enjoyed myself. There are other things, not related to the witch trials, to check out in Salem - graveyard, buildings, house of seven gables. And go to Pickering Wharf (unless they have changed the name) there are a number of little shops to peruse.

At the north end of the town, on Rt 1A across from the Common is the Salem Witch Museum. Go to www.salemwitchmuseum.com for more information.
