In Bittorrent, you can think of the whole system as a weird library, with a very busy librarian, and easy to use photocopiers.

When you open a Torrent with a BT client, the torrent would have specified a tracker (sometimes, more than one!) that you need to connect to.

The tracker is the librarian that keeps track of all things related to the file being specified in the torrent. Your BT client talks to the tracker and gets a list of the folks that has "pieces" of the file you want. The tracker itself has no files. It just knows where the pieces are.

Your BT client then connects with the other computers and gets the individual pieces.

Eventually, you'll get enough pieces to assemble the whole thing.

Thus, without a tracker, the whole thing goes down.

EXCEPTION: Some of the latest advances in BT allows what is known as a "trackerless torrent". However, you have to use Azureus or uTorrent (or something that does support trackerless torrent) to see if it can found without a tracker.

The tracker is the server which hold the data of the file you want to download. So if the tracker is down, you are unable to download.
Please read the error message, as some trackers are private and requires a password.

A tracker doesn't hold the actual files that you want to download, but it acts like a "pointer" in that it has all the info telling who has what and where. You probably already know, but your files actually come from different sources (other people's pc's and servers) and everyone is sharing individual pieces of the file you download. So apparently the tracker has all that info too (which pieces to send from whom to you).

I have used Azureus for years and they have great add-on's like Peer Guardian that keeps currupted data (that companies like to send) from reaching your pc and it will even ban ip addresses that try to send bad data too much.

I would also suggest using Peer Guardian to help keep the bad guys out.
