Are you offended by it? Do you embrace it?
Is it racist?

It is discrimination, by definition.

I currently hold a great job and I believe I was hired based upon my qualifications and promoted based upon my merits.

Affirmative action puts this into question. Further, I would hate to think that a better-qualified person was passed over because my company had quotas to make.

I am white, NOT a racist, but am very interested in the answers you receive. I've got to see them! I already know that Conservative minorities are offended by Affirmative Action, already KNOWING it is an unnecessary law made by Liberals, for the so-called "help" minorities claim to need to be successful in getting jobs, and an education. Hmmm, I wonder how so many successful Republican minorities, without using Affirmative Action, got their jobs? Maybe because they studied hard, did their homework, and cared? Maybe they worked their buns off, like a white person might do, so succeeded in life?
It is racist, to give anyone of any race, a free ride, just because of the color of their skin. The most educated, determined individual, because of their hard work, should gain what they worked for, receiving their aim, because they earned it, not because they are a minority, and didn't.

I'm white, and I know for a fact that there are a huge number of white people who still consider blacks and other minorities to be inferior human beings.

Affirmative action might not be the best thing - but it is at least an attempt at finding a solution.

Deep-seated hatred for people who are different from yourself has been passed from generation to generation -teaching your children to fear and hate those who are different than them should be considered a form of child abuse.

The sad thing is that whether it is because of, or despite programs like affirmative action, blacks and other minorities still do not have equal rights under the law in this country. They do not have the same opportunities a white man has.

I can tell you for sure, that if the government hadn't gotten involved, we would still have seperate drinking fountains.

Affirmative action protects minorities from being ignored in job selection, our ability to seek a home; rented or otherwise. It may seem like tokenism to some and sometimes it feels that way, but the day being a minority is not extraordinary and we are judged by our character, background or credit check, then no one would have anything to worry about, til then what do you propose we replace affirmative action with? NOTHING!! Then you'll have a bigger problem.

I am offended by it for two reasons:

1. We shouldn't have to have a law that forces people to hire us

2. It is a shame that this law is still needed because, regardless whether you believe it or not, some employers are indeed racist.

I think we're at that point where it's not absolutely necessary to have. More and more people are using it as a tool to be lazy. Today, everyone is capable of reaching their own potential without assistance from the government. There are numerous free programs and other methods that allow you opportunities to compete equally with everyone else.

It's dumb as hell. I also don't like hyphenated-american labels.
