First thing to do is notify your landlord of the situation, advise that you are looking for help, and will pay up as soon as it is found. Being proactive in this situation is far better than letting the landlord call YOU about the shortage.

Then start calling the social service agencies in your area and ask for guidance. Even if you get the wrong agency once or twice, in short order someone will direct you to the correct agency, if there IS help available. Bear in mind that this 'help' varies by locale, and there is no guarantee that it exists where you live.

Grab the blue pages of your phone book. Look under government services. Call you landlord and be upfront, let him/her know that they money will be coming, but due to the car accident you are short on cash right now. Your car insurance should have had some part, or the other party involved in the accident to cover your expense while you are out of work. If not, you’ll need disability right away, and it is going to take some time for the payments to start coming in.
