I read years ago in a book about restaurant's secret recipes that the "secret" herbs and spices on KFC's chicken are the SAME herbs and spices you'd find in a packet for making Italian dressing. If I remember correctly, they suggested mixing a packet of Italian dressing mix (the powdered stuff) with bread crumbs or crushed Saltine crackers or flour or whatever you like to bread chicken with. Sounds good to me!

I'm not sure exactly what they are but one time I made fried chicken using paprika and just a little Chinese five-spice powder in the four coating and it came pretty close to the Colonel's....
