How do i start a cheerleading organization? Get the non profit status?

I want to start a cheerleading organization in my small town, but i dont know anything about making it non-profit and getting a federal id number and such. i need help

Is this a Rec type of team rather than school? Maybe try googling 'how to apply for nonprofti status' and see what comes up.

Do you have a plan beyond that? A safe practice space and how to cover liability insurance? Our Rec board wouldn't take us on due to the high cost of the insurance. Lucky for us, the school let us have a team and we are covered through them.
