Being polite can get you really far but it's more true with people who really appreciate it. I try to always be polite and my kids learned "please" and "thank you" quickly since I usually won't move out of my path for them (stop what I'm doing to get something they want) unless they say it.
On the other hand, it will never get you further then the limit. If someone says no, then it's no, saying please many times shouldn't change that fact.

As these simple niceties & common courtesies seem to be fleeting, I can assure you "please" & "thank you" go quite far with me! However, not saying them, will get a person nowhere with me. I can be hard about it sometimes. Like when someone wants to bum a cigarette from me....if they don't say please, they don't get it & they better say thank you or I'll take it back! lol Of course, it's my friends daughter's friends that usually do the asking & yes, they are old enough. :-)

Depends on who you're pleasing and who your'e thanking.
While people do forget sometimes, people always notice when you say it.
