If you can, get MasterCard or Visa. A debit card that uses these systems for cash, and a credit card for paying bigger bills.
Most ATM's in Europe do not honour American Express and some shops do not accept them either.
ATM's are at almost any shopping street, almost at any corner in the touristy areas.
American Express is known as a more expensive system, mainly for the shop owners, and is hardly ever used in Europe.

It is always better to have cards from different systems anyhow.

I was in the hotel industry for almost 9 years in the US and we were always comfortable accepting American Express. If it were me, I would take a combo, American Express as well as Travelers Cheques, that way you're covered no matter what. Good luck and have a great time!

It would be difficult to use the card for cash at the hotel unless they are set up to receive your pin. On the other hand though, I recently travelled with checks and found a lot of places didn't know what they were and wouldn't take them. The card would have been better for me. Maybe take both.

I am not 100% sure but I would say no , you can not get cash from the hotel.
