I had a number of raisins. I ate 1 and gave half of the remaining portion to Mark. I then ate another 1 and gave a 3rd of the remaining portion to Jill. I ended up with 6 raisins. How many did I start with?

You started with 21 raisins.

Ate 1= 20 raisins left.
1/2 to Mark=10 raisins left.
Ate 1=9 raisins left.
1/3 to Jill=6 left.

Sigh. If you ended up with 6 raisins? Are you including the ones you ate beforehand? If not, it's a totally different answer than if you are.

You started with 21 if you aren't counting the ones you already ate, by the way. 21-1=20/2=10-1=9-3 (1/3)=6.

21 raisins?

6 is the 2/3rds left, plus the 1/3 you gave to jill, which makes 9. plus one is 10, double that you get 20, add the one you ate, you get 21.
