"King Carl" Hubbel

Mickey Welch was probably the first pitcher to use it. Mathewson used a form of it but it hurt his arm too much. Carl Hubbell, Mike Marshall, Fernando Valenzuela, Bill 'Spaceman' Lee, John Franco and Mike Cuellar all used the screwball to varying effectiveness.

Christy Mathewson is considered the first pitcher to use it effectively in the major leagues, pitching for the New York Giants from 1900 to 1916 and winning 373 games (remember, though, it was the Dead Ball Era). He called the pitcher the "fadeaway," and never claimed to have invented it, and there's some question as to who taught it to him. But he was the first to make it work at the big-league level. Because Mathewson was so far ahead of other pitchers of his time, it never really caught on until a later Giant Hall-of-Famer, lefthander Carl Hubbell, used it in the 1930s.

The original pitch was called a "fadeaway" and it was inventented by an unknown player by the name of Mickey Welch and the technique was mastered by Christy Mathewson. This "fadeaway" later became known as a "screwball".

Carl Hubbell was the best known practitioner of the pitch. He gained fame by striking out several Am. Leaguers in an All-Star game. I doubt that he is the one that invented the pitch.
