You were not supposed to laminate the paper cards. The lamination makes it easier to hide changes to the card, and make it harder for people to identify fraudulent cards. Your SSN card is not something you should carry in your wallet anyway. Leave it at home or in a safety deposit box unless you need to bring somewhere, and then put it right back. Having your wallet stolen is bad enough, but now the thieves have your date of birth from your driver’s license and your social security number, and that opens the door for massive identity theft.

The gentleman who had his SSN card stolen with his wallet. Pull your credit report ASAP and look for fraudulent items on your report.

Well all of the new ones dont need it as they are plastic. But the old ones were paper. Mine was stolen with my wallet years ago and I laminated it ( i just tore off the tab taht said dont laminate and laminated it anyway.)
But I had had that since I was a young kid.
Currently I dont even have a card. Ever time I go to teh SSI office there is like 20 people in line, you have to take a number and sit there for hours on end and I never have that much time.
Will have to endure it one of these times.

Anyway the laminate thing was I believe when they were paper they didnt want them tampered with like someone changing a name on it then laminating it. I assume anyway.

Because they can be faked easier. But I laminated my last one until the police lost my wallet. My new one is not laminated yet. But thats a good idea. :)

If you take a close look to the ss card, it is not completed smooth, it is kind of wrinkled, with little bumps. It was supposed to make them secure, in case somebody tries to make a fake one. But it doesn't work, people could still make a very similar one and fool some people.
It's like the dollar bills and the secure features.

I laminated mine when I was a teenager and before I heard the Feds prohibited such a heinous act. Been on the run ever since, moving from safehouse to safehouse. It's been hard. I'm also wanted for a tearing the tag off of a mattress beef.

They say you shouldnt, because people like law enforcement, or boarder patroll, can't determine if you've tampered with it. I'm geting my lamenated anyway, alot of people do, it perserves the card, and theres not a whole lot anyone can say about it.

I never knew you weren't supposed to. I did mine and also my kids when they got old enough to sign their name. Reality, how often do you have to show it. Applying for public assistance or when you hired for a job.
