Fake identity is usually the social mask we wear. If conditions call for specific kind of behaviour, we are becoming our fake self. But this should only stop in behaviour and not go deeper to personality and feelings. We should always be our true self and when in need to project our fake one, we must always have the maturity and pay attention not to go over the limits and confuse fake with true. As long as you can control it to stay only on level of behaviour (smile when you don't feel like, say kind words when you want to send to hell, shake hands when you want to give a punch,... this kind of things), it is let us say.. politically correct.
But if you can stand up for your true identity under any circumstances, this is the best and I admire such people. Because it takes courage , determination and bravery.

This is a great question- in a lot of ways, I am more free to be who I really am on Yahoo answers. I have felt most of my life that I was too intense for most people's tastes.
So I have spent most of my life trying to modify my behavior to fit social norms. Sometimes I get by, sometimes I'm a miserable failure.

Never.Even my avatar re[resents the reality of what i am...People love me for what i am, even if sometimes i am rude, and not so kind, because i love my peace and loneliness..
I wouldnt be myself, if i had to smile to everyone, but i never do it..It is a waste of time, and time is precious for me...

We all have to be different people throught the day with various people that we come in contact with. I dont think we honestly know who we are.
