First answer not bad, for a woman, lol! :-p
Force and Chryslers, I not know what they were doing, but, it was not good. Also, too old of an engine can be a problem when it come to parts, though they out there, but, can get expensive.
Now it story time. I love telling my stories. I enjoy hitting yard sales, mainly just interacting with the people. I also enjoy something out of the norm, as everyone not have. Well this Old School had a Royal 3 outboard. Dang! It like something from the 50's lol! $25 he say make and offer and it was running last he used it. Heck, I not even diddle around and gave him $25. Cleaned the carb and points and it fired right up, been using it for 3 years now. Been offered $100, but, it my baby now!
If, you shop around you should find something for around $300-350. It really will depend on how new you want. Most boat motors not get used that much and well known brands like Evinrude, Johnson, Mercury, Honda, etc. ALL good if the price is right. You may not want a Royal 3 lol!
A buddy of mine found a 10 HP (9.9 to be technical) Evinrude with a stand in the trash!!!!! Ha! Yes, it blowed my mind too. Some Old School just sit it out on the side of the road with the rest of his trash. Free!!!! That beat my $25 Royal. Thing fired right up. It was a 70's model.

The Price as stated probably 300-500$ BUT the best idea is yard sales...My advice try to get something with a common name From my recent experience Parts can be very expensive and hard to find....Evinrude And Johnson from '60 and up most parts are easy to find..but a '53 7.5 hp firestone like I have....Good luck!!! AND if you can do minor repairs ...don't be afraid to buy one that is priced cheap..just be sure to look for things like paint flaked off the head..That is a sign of overheating...Hope this helps!! P.S. The depth of your pockets will determine how nice of an engine you get.....
God Bless.

Your throwing the dice with a used engine, or even a re-manufactured one, outboards are one of those things that are really better off bought "NEW". The 2-cycle gets beat up on a regular basis, Speed & lightweight are it's advantages, unfortunately "Longevity" is not one of them. They run at 5500 RPM's all day, try THAT with your car motor !

New - about $1000
Used - unknown but probably much less than new; I know that companies sell rebuilt/refurbished engines at much lower rates too, even with warranties. Look around....especially on the net or in you local town or closest city.
Hope this helps.
