Why is the Sorting made with people sitting in a stool? Is there something more to the stool or is it just to prevent nervous first-years to collapse on the floor (although it's useless in Neville's case!)?

Good theory, ES! But unfortunately, the stool is four-legged!

I think its just easier to have them sit. Like in some peoples case, it takes forever for them to be sorted, so they wouldn't have to stand the entire time! But, who knows? It might have been made with the hat!

Because the stool is prescribed by Hogwarts tradition. A chair has four legs, enough to represent each house. A stool has three legs, only enough to represent three of the four houses. The fourth house is the one assigned to the new student. The stool also represents how each of the three other houses have to work together to support the fourth. The stool symbolizes how the four houses of Hogwarts must always stick together.

i don't think the stool has only thing to do with the sorting.i think that there's a stool so everyone can see who's being sorted.the hat probably with make first year's student faint like Neville.but i think it's just a normal stool

It's just something portable that the kids can sit on while being sorted... sometimes, it can take over a minute for someone to get sorted, so it's easier to let them sit then to make them stand.

It's more comfortable for first years than to just stand there. It also takes awhile for some people so it'd be better for them to sit and wait.

I think it's to prevent the kids from freaking out and running with the hat on their head!

so they dont collapse on the floor, although, like you said, that obviously didnt work 4 neville.

To rest the hat on and a focused point for the children to head to for the sorting, rather then, "please stand here." a stool is self explanatory.

i dont think that there is something special about sitting...its just a polite way to do the sorting ceremony...it wouldnt be that nice to stand i guess...
