This is what our lame duck president said:

The president also said that, while al-Qaida remains a threat to the United States, it has been hurt by his war on terrorism and is "weaker today than they would have been" otherwise. He spoke as a new U.S. threat assessment found that al Qaida had rebuilt its capability to mount attacks to levels not seen since 2001.

Because it was a lie.

It's actually quite easy to tell when W is lying...his lips are moving.

The Al Quaeda thing has been a red herring all along, a feeble pretense to assert US influence in Iraq for the express purpose of providing economic gain to select special interests. The chaos in the middle east, far from petroleum producing regions has brought a windfall to OPEC, unprecedented in the history of human civilization. The Saudis don't give a damn about Iraq, but it is unequivocal that Bin Ladin was a Saudi, and a prominent one at that.

The picture a while back of W and the Saudi Crown Prince holding hands and Kissing ought to dispel any doubts regarding what this is all about.

Bush has never been very well connected to reality. He contradicts his own administrations reports constantly. It would be comical if people weren't still dying.
