One of my boarded horses urinates & defecates frequently right under the awning where all the shade is and the horses like to stand. This is also where the water buckets are. She is the Alpha mare. Why does she do this and more impotantly how can I get her to move to a different location? She is the only horse that does this in the area, everyone else goes out in the field!!

You could try moving her piles to another location. Start by moving them 10 or so feet away at first and then farther and farther away from the awning. I have trained horses to potty in different areas of their stalls this way. I brought in another horses pile and set it where I wanted the horses to go and then they will poop on top of the strange pile. When you move her pile then go and get another horses pile and set it next to the alpha mares pile. She is just establishing the shady spot as hers. If she doesn't go over to where you moved her fresh pile then take her over there. Since she is not yours you really can't use aversion as a tool like electronic dog collars that emit noise or shock when she gets close to the place where she likes to relieve herself.

Unfortunatly for you there really is nothing you can do she sees that as her area so unless you show her that it is your spot by becoming head horse (some trainings work on this) You may just have to deal and clean the area. Remember trained or not these are still large animals with minds of their own and when not being handled will really do what they want

It's called stud piling. Stallions and alpha mares do this to mark territory.

Not sure there's a lot you can do about it except isolate her from the herd with her own shade.

There's really nothing you can do. She's the alpha, she runs the joint.
But sure to move the water away, if you can.

Only way to stop her is to move her somewhere else.

she does this because she thinks that it is her teratory. you could put her in field all day and she should find some where else to do that.
