There are parallel tracks:
Track One: These "people" only respond to one form of action against them. You have to kill them before they kill us and kill them when they pop their heads out of their hiding places.
It is brutal, but reality. Extreme force is the solution to dealing with those that are actively engaged in training, planning, or execution of an attack.
Track Two: Unfortunately, the culture in many countries is rule by absolute authority. People in these cultures have been dictated for centuries, and they don't understand freedom.
We must, and we must do a better job, of exposing these good folks to freedom, democracy, and civility. This will take at least a generation to make progress.
Summary: Embrace those that seek a better and more hopeful future, and destroy those that intend to kill.

My view is that any extremist radical religion or political group is dangerous.
The best way to deal with them is to learn their history, understand their culture. Once this knowledge is obtained the group must be destroyed from within. Any outside aggression polarizes people and can cause sympathy supporters.
As far as Islam I feel it needs to be dealt with between the sects. Make it clear to all Muslems that the Sunni and Shite hate each other as much as they hate Christians and Jews. Once they are pitted against each other they will destroy themselves if they do not adapt more moderate views.

FIRST let me say, I am very IMPRESSED with the answers to your question. This is a subject that will be debated and discussed for many years to come.
I spent several years in the Middle East back in the 60's and I can say that things were no different then than they are today, except they were not ready to take on the Jews or Christians.
They dress and live the same as they have for hundreds of years. We really can't blame the people who live outside the major cities for taking on the ideas of terrorists as they are as our own Colonists were back in the 1700. They too depended on outsiders passing through to give them news of the rest of the world ...Be it good or bad. Pro British or anti. How we used the news here was depending on how good the news bearer was as a salesman.
There, its also fear that their news bearer brings to them.

Islamic Radicals seek to re-create the caliphate. A pan Islamic republic. This is their goal #1.
After achieving goal #1, they seek to spread islam and Islamic law accross thee ENTIRE globe. They will NOT stop fighting and such unitl one of two things happens.
1. They achieve goals 1 and 2 above.
2. They are EXTERMINATED.
Now, we have to decide how we respond. Before long, the price of fence sitting will get prety high. While you sit the fence they still attack.
Stop them now, and have a fairly large and expensive war.
Stop them later, have a bigger nastier and more devastating war that will be long and kill hundreds of millions.
Surrender. Institude Sharia law etc...

Nibbles, I like your answer. What I wish would happen is that every one of the m would decide they had to be suicide bombers and our government had some futuristic weapon that could protect all of us from the blast. They want to go to Allah? Lets help them.

right now saudi arabian billionares very defiantly give millions to terrorists and are very open about it.
one has never even been questioned about this.
this must stop.
what will the terrorists be if they have no money for plane tickets, hotel rooms, food, bullets - not much i'd wager...

I am sure that there are people bent on using violence as a means to political ends -
There must at all times be room for disent and debate but there at no time can be room for violence or intimidation -
How do you deal with the fanatics and self styled revolutionaries ?
By being yourself a free open and transparent society -
That uses the laws of the land - to root out those who would seek to harm or destroy -
Stand firm - but do not become so inflexable and so lost - that you become what you fight or those who would steal your freedoms and liberties have won

Leave it alone or banish it. If you want the oil, carpet bomb the entire region. If you want peace on earth, leave them to their own device. There is NOTHING in between that will satisfy the rest of the world.

We have to deal with the radicals the same way they deal with us: kill them -- all of them -- without mercy! The Talmud tells us that when someone is coming to kill us we may rise up and kill them first! God doesn't expect us to be martyrs if there's any way we can avoid it. And if the Muslim radicals insist on being "martyrs", then let us make it so. Better them than us!
