it would be near imposible.
the independant parliaments would have to raise the taxes so high to pay for the army, benifits, schools so onn and soforth that it would make sense to stay as one UK.

I'm Welsh and think this would be a great shame.

I like the UK as it is. I have no interest in Wales being "Independent".

I can't see what the benefits would be to be honest. I'm not a Welsh speaker and my partner is from Kent so where would we fit into Plaid Cymru's "Everyone must speak Welsh and be called Dai and Gwyn" plan???

I guess if it did happen and Wales did become independent there should be an English parliament as its only fair.

But I hope it won't. I'm happy to be part of Britain and I hope we will stay that way!

Setting up the infrastructure for such a political proposal would be easier than the current situation in Iraq or even the situation bewtween Palestine and Israel. Regional assemblies would probabley be a good start if that's the direction one wants to go. But collectively a single governing body has a bit more clout with representation for it's many groups of interest.

The Act of Union came about because Scotland was bankrupt. It does not have the infrastructure to support itself.
It is totally dependant on the English taxpayer, who is getting fed up with supporting the Scots to the tune £1,500 more per head than is spent on the English.
Also there are no student fees in Scotland, no prescription charges, free drugs that are denied to the English, no care home fees. You don't have to sell your house to go into nursing home in Scotland to pay for your care.
There is a growing groundswell of English people wanting a English Parliament, looking after English issues.
The situation with a Scottish Prime Minister cannot continue, Scottish MPs voting on issues that do not affect their constituencies.
There is a lot of resentment north of the border, some would say, downright racism, towards the English. A lot of English have had problems with the locals when moving into their communities.
The SNP have only one more vote than Labour in Scotland, if this becomes a working majority for the SNP, Labour will lose its power base in the whole of the UK, making a Labour government highly unlikely ever again.
It will certainly be an interesting period at the next general election. Gordon Brown is fighting for more than just his job as PM.

The English are not generally liked by the Scots or Welsh, but it would probably be impractical and better the devil you know , anyway with a jock prime minister and the likely to remain unresolved West Lothian question. the Scots hold all the aces and are enjoying making the English squirm!

Micro government is both horrificaly costly and a bureaucratic hell.

Reducing us down into ever smaller tribal and regional groups in the world of today is not the way forward.

I think Scotland, the six counties of Ireland and Wales should be totally free of the UK. They were forced into the bloody kingdom ('acts of union' shoved down our throats) and now is the time to dissolve it. Let wee England stand alone - third rate power that she now is!
