Confused,
We're supposed to start going;
1. Once we become sexually active
2. Have any form of reproductive issue diagnosed by your primary care physician.
3. After the age of 21 regardless of 1 or 2.
Good Luck :-)

Current recommendations are to have your first pap smear within 3 years of the first time you have sex.
This is because the pap screens for cervical cancer (which is almost unheard of among virgins) and it takes a few years for precancerous cellular changes to show up.
There is NO need for a pap smear until you are sexually active. However, it's best to start a birth control method before you have sex, and that would require a visit to a family planning clinician.
There are other issues to consider too, such as STD screening.
So, make an appointment when you are considering beginning a sexual relationship. It is not necessary to have a pap smear in order for your clinician to prescribe birth control, if you have not had sex yet.

Every woman should see a gynecologist with her mother, or another adult woman in her life that is very close, before she is out of high school just to get the experience. It's like visiting any doctor for the first time, it's nice to have some one who has done it before with you, and the earlier you go, the sooner you get rid of all the myths and horror stories that you have heard.

I didn't go for the first time untill I was pg with my first baby. At the age of 17. I started my period at the age of 9 and I would think I should have gone at the age I was thinking about having sex.

I went at age 11.
You should go after you start menstruating, and most especially BEFORE you plan on becoming sexually active.

If you are having sex, you need to go once you become sexually active.
Otherwise you can start once you are 18.
