I don't think its Serius's brother for two reasons. First he wasn't an exceptional wizard. I say this because serius says he's not important enough to be killed by Voldemort; the "greatest" wizard alive was inches away from death after getting the fake locket so i doubt a half wit could have done it. Second Regulus died shortly after joining the death eaters. I don't think that Voldemorts closest followers knew that he had horcrux's (See Malfoy's reckless behavior with the diary) and if his closest followers didn't know i doubt someone who joined the death eaters for a short while then was killed would have figured it out, then broken through all of Voldemorts traps. I think that it was someone close to voldemort probably one of the kids in the room in the memory, Harry Dumbledore OLD slug-club members and R.A.B are the only ones who know about voldemorts horcrux's so far.

Also The locket in grimmauld place seems unlikely to me. It was immediately evident to tom riddle and the store owner when first looking at it that it once belonged to slytherin. Probably his emblem on the front cover. If a member of the order saw something with the slytherin mark on it in the house they wouldn't toss it to the side like that. If that was the case it seems strange that such an important element int the story wasn't even given a full sentence.

absolutely correct serius would be bias. So that reason is out the window. I never thought of the half-blood thing. The reason i have such a hard time believing its regulus is that the majority of death eaters are Blacks or married to Blacks, but a Black that found out Voldemort was half-blood would betray him. With that said o still don't want to believe it. It would be too obvious if it was Regulus in my opinion. I like being shocked, Regulus was the first person to come to everyones mind theres no shock there =(

Your first argument is that Regulus wasn't strong... We get all of our facts about Regulus from Sirius, so Regulus' strength as a wizard, his motivations, and his character, are all seen from a very biased point of view.

This is the letter from R.A.B:

To the Dark Lord
I know I will be dead long before you read this,
but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret.
I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can.
I face death in the hope that when you meet your match
you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B.

The letter suggests that R.A.B. knows that he will be killed soon, for a completely different reason than stealing the locket. He wants Voldemort to know who it is, exactly, that took the locket.

If he was killed as a result of taking the locket, that would mean that someone would have known it was him who stole it, making it pointless for him to leave a "it was me!" note. He obviously thought that he was dying for a different reason, since he expected to be dead "long" before Voldemort read the note. Why would it be such a long time, if someone knew about the locket being stolen by Regulus?

The note says "it was I who discovered your secret" and everyone assumes he means the horcruxes are the secret... but why would he write "I have discovered your secret horcruxes" when it's quite obvious that he has discovered them, by stealing one?

What if the "secret" the note talks of is the secret of Voldemort being only a half-blood?

We know that the Black family follows Voldemort because Voldemort represents the purity of blood, and promises a world where pure-bloodedness is close to godliness. That's why the Black family supports him. What if Regulus found out that Voldemort was half-blood, and THAT was his motivation for wanting to kill Voldemort?

We saw how Bellatrix responded to Harry when he told her that Voldemort was half-blood... he has kept it VERY secret, and has also killed his only relatives (probably so nobody could go snooping around about his past).

The fact that the cave represents Voldemort's childhood suggests that Regulus might have done the snooping that Voldemort had tried to prevent. If Regulus knew to look in that cave for the locket, then he, like Dumbledore, must have done some research about Voldemort's past.

And don't be too quick to ignore the locket in Grimmauld Place... the day after Half-Blood Prince was released, JK Rowling was interviewed and she said:

JKR: Well, I'm prepared to bet you now, that at least before the week is out, at least one of the Horcruxes will have been correctly identified by careful re-readers of the books.

So that's why I believe R.A.B. is definitely Regulus Black

*edit*

Don't worry too much about not being shocked by Regulus being R.A.B.... JK Rowling mentioned him many times on purpose, so that we would be able to guess R.A.B.'s identity. She could have kept it secret if she wanted, easily.

What we have more trouble guessing (and will be surprised to learn about) is how did he figure out all of Voldemort's secrets? Who was with him to drink the poison? What did he do that caused him to be hunted down and murdered by other Death Eaters? Why wasn't the locket horcrux destroyed, if the note clearly states that he would destroy it as soon as possible? THESE are where the surprises will come, not in the identity of R.A.B. :)

I have always had the suspicion that JKR will change the story line if too many people guess what comes next. (eg. Mrs Figg may have originally been a witch, but when we all shared that idea, JKR made her a Squib instead)

So I think Regulus started out as R.A.B. for a couple of reasons:

- In different languages, the initials R.A.B. changed to use the same last name as Sirius Black (to whatever BLACK was in that language). So if Sirius had "N" as his last initial, then R.A.N. wrote the note

- One of the most trusted Death Eaters was Regulus's aunt ... Bellatrix. Even though Regulus wouldn't have heard about the Horcruxes, Bellatrix may have said too much once, as she almost did to Snape at his house.

- Regulus left the Death Eaters when he realised he got in too deep. I think Voldemort asked him to do something he didn't want to ... (opinion) Regulus had to kill his Order of the Pheonix brother, Sirius. He was asked to do that while still underaged, at a similar age as Draco was when he was to kill Dumbledore and as Voldemort was when he killed his own father.

- It is true that Regulus was not too experienced a wizard, but he may have been the second in the boat just like Harry was. Was his Uncle Alphard (removed from the tapestry for giving Sirius money) the first in the boat? Or did Regulus take Kreatcher with him which is how the locket got back to the Noble House of Black?

It's definitely Regulus. Some translator who was translating the book from English to Norwegian or something needed to know who it was so that she could correctly translate the initials and she went to the press saying it was Regulus. And you're forgetting Kreacher. I bet Regulus made Kreacher drink the potion and that's why he's so freaky weird. I'm not saying that Voldemort TOLD Regulus about it. The note said that he "found out" his secret.

I think its Regulus Black, and Rowling has given hints that it probably is. Also, something not given a full sentence would be likely for the locket. Good authors don't give away too much of somethings importance before they want you to know it's important.

Don't forget that Dumbledore and Harry came to the conclusion that no one witch or wizard could retrieve the locket alone, because of the potion. So Regulus (and yes, I believe it was him) was the adult wizard, but who the underage one was is anybody's guess...for now...
