What are the reprecusions if you get caught with a satellite signal your not paying for? Also what is the legality of FTA recievers?

In California, you can be imprisoned, fined, and then the cable company can sue you for triple the damages.

My understanding is that FTA receivers are not illegal to use as sold in original state.
They become illegal when you tamper with them and load programs to open other satellite systems.
Laws vary by region and country. I think it is hard to get caught, unless you advertize like you sell the service, or you tell too many people about it.
The main drawback why I wouldnt do it is that you may find yourself spending $400 on a receiver, dish, installation and for paying for a subscription to receive the programming codes, and no one will guarantee your system will be functional and running 24/7. I have known people that wait all week for a game or a fight and on the day before the event, their system goes kaboom and they are left without a signal.
