I think its the only choice the Yankees have. 1) A-Rod is the only right-handed power threat in the Yankees lineup. He's already been worth about 5.5 extra wins to the Yankees just in the first half of the year. Plus the Texas Rangers are paying us something like $10 million a year which we'd lose if he opts out of his current contract. From a business standpoint, it would be stupid to let him walk, especially when guys like Soriano and Carlos Lee, who can't come close to A-Rod's talent, are getting $16-18 million/year contracts (which is about what we're paying him when Texas' money is figured in). Plus, what good free agent pitchers are going to be on the market this winter? Carlos Zambrano is the only one I see. Also, its easy to say let him walk but who would you bring in to replace A-Rod's production?
2) The Yankees, thanks to Brian Cashman, have built up an amazing farm system that's full of pitching prospects. We've already seen Phil Hughes and Tyler Clippard this year. Plus there are guys like Joba Chamberlain, Russ Ohlendorf, Humberto Sanchez, etc who are all projected to be able to perform on the major league level. The nice thing about them is that they're all cost-controlled for the first 6 years. The Yankees can pay them league minimum (approx ~$400,000) so their contracts won't even be a factor possibly even until A-Rod's contract and extension has expired.
In short, this team needs A-Rod. He is essential to this team if they want to be contenders.

Money is not a problem for the NYY.
They can get anyone whom they would like but for now the best choice is A-Rod because the pitching needs offensive help and A-Rod is the biggest contributor on the team.
NYY already got good potential young pitchers to invest upon (Phil Hughes, Chien-Ming Wang, Brian Bruney...) and besides the reputation of the YANKS as the "Bronx Bombers" got to live for generations and generations and it all starts with A-Rod and Jeter
I really hope though that he wouldn't choke during the playoffs because it is the only time of the season where everything would count.

True. In a couple of years Johan becomes a free agent. Carlos Zambrono is going be a free agent this year. Those two pitchers alone will help you win a World Series. Then also defense will championship. He has not won a gold glove for 3B and then A Rod is not clutch. He does not HIT in the play offs.

You are so right!!! Why can't Steinbrenner get that? BUT -- A-Rod is one of those guys they should keep, probably. As Lyndon Johnson said, "I'd rather have him inside the tent p***ing out than outside the tent p***ing in." He may go to an AL team and there you are, good pitching isn't going to stop him every day. Jeter, Cano, Matsui, and Posada are keepers, too. Everyone else can go. GET THE YANKEES SOME PITCHING!!!!

Pitching absolutely does win championships, however, I think signing A-Rod would be a great idea.
The Yankees have pitching problems, (although they do have pitching talent, notably their own farm system-raised Wang who is an excellent young pitcher). There are any number of ways they can obtain new pitching, but they also have to hang onto good non-pitchers, too. Of those non-pitchers, A-Rod is of the more expensive ones, but he's also an excellent player.

The Yanks need to desperately re-sign A-Rod. Even on his worst year(last year) he still hit 35+ HR and drove in over 110 RBIs. He will make a run at Bonds for the all-time HR record and will get 3000 hits. Nobody will be able to afford A-Rod except the Yanks and if he goes somewhere else he'll forever have the albatross of Yankee failures under his belt.

Steinbrenner has no interest in the salary cap and money is not an issue for the Yankees. I believe A-Rod will elect to stay with the Yankees and that will not stop the Yankees from signing the best pitchers they can come up with if they feel they need to supplement their current staff.

He doesn't have an option to pick up... He has an opt-out clause in his contract which means the decision is his. If he decides to become a free agent he can, but if he doesn't then the final three years of the deal are gauranteed. The Yankees can't do anything about it, its completely up to him at this point. If he opts out I think anyone would be stupid to sign him to a deal paying him more than he already gets, especially the Yankees who aren't paying all of his salary right now. I bet the Rangers are praying that he opts out so they won't have to pay him to play for someone else anymore.

The season he's having will guarantee he could sign with anyone. The Yankees do have the inside track but its not a given. He could ask for a further outrageous amount and George would balk. You Never Know.

I think it is a good idea. The Rangers are paying a large portion of his salary right now so the Yanks aren't hurt by his salary much. For another seven or eight million it is not that bad. They have spent money in worse ways. How much did they give that Japanese fellow that is pitiful? They should try and keep him, he is a great ball player.
