The elephant is a relative of the mammoth, but the trunk of a mammoth is shorter than the trunk of an elephant, and they have thick hair on their skin, whereas elephants have no hair. Woolly mammoths, even as babies, have a small trunk and small tusks around the trunk; elephants don't.

they are similar in appearance - the tusks of the wooley mammoth are more curved and larger and they have a great deal of body hair. A person with no training probably could not tell the difference between an elephant and a mammoth.

The most obvious clue is there are no elephants living in Siberia. Any elephant discovered there is very likley an extinct species. The only elephant species known to live in Siberia is the mammoth which is extinct. Proving the animal isn't a modern elephant would involve radio carbon dating the specimen and then comparing the DNA to modern elephants. Baby mammals of similar species look very much alike. Baby lions and baby tigers have nearly identical porportions.

mammoths, used to live in the ice ages. it seemed they disappeared rather suddenly at the end of the ice age.
they mammoth are commonly known as wooly mammoth since they had long hair all over.
contarty to popular belief, the mammoths were not any bigger than the modern elephants. most of them were only as big as modern asian elephants.
so the distinguishing factors between the elephant and the mammoth would be,
mammoths had much larger tusks compared to modern elephants.
they had longer thicker hair all over
even if they were not taller than modern elephants, they looked much bulkier due to the dense hair.

It is true that they are related but there are many difference between the two species. And scientists/paleontologists are trained for such things so they might see more of the differences than the average person might.

The best way for a person, not a scientist, to tell the difference is to do a little research for yourself.
